School holidays don’t always have to mean spending money.
In fact, they can be a great opportunity to get kids thinking about money in a fun and practical way, without sitting them down for a big “money lesson”.
So I’ve created a FREE School Holiday Money Hunt for families to use these holidays.
And yes, it’s actually free.

What is the School Holiday Money Hunt?
The idea is simple.
Kids work their way through a series of money challenges during the school holidays and tick them off as they go.
They might find loose change around the house, look for things they no longer use that could be sold, compare the price of something they normally buy with a cheaper option, find a free activity or think of something they could make using things they already have.
There are also challenges around saving money, making money and finding creative ways to have fun without spending much at all.
And then there’s the big challenge...
Can you turn $0 into $20 these school holidays?
Learning about money without making it feel like a lesson
One of the easiest ways for kids to learn about money is simply by using it in everyday life.
Looking at prices.
Making choices.
Working out whether something is worth buying.
Saving towards something they really want.
Finding ways to earn a few dollars.
Realising that having fun doesn’t necessarily mean spending lots of money.
These little experiences can help start conversations about saving, spending, budgeting, earning money and making good money choices.
And because they’re actually doing it, rather than just reading about it, those lessons can be much easier to understand.
Make it a family challenge
You can print the Money Hunt and stick it on the fridge, take it with you while you’re out and about or let the kids work through the challenges themselves.
At the bottom, they can keep track of how much money they:
found, made, collected from containers and saved.
There’s no perfect way to complete it.
The whole point is to get creative and see what they can come up with.
