NDIS Money Skills Are Not Just About Bills

NDIS Money Skills Are Not Just About Bills and budgets. Discover how practical support can help participants build confidence, manage everyday spending and save towards meaningful goals.

When people hear the word budgeting, they often think of bills, spreadsheets and someone telling them they cannot buy the things they want.

But practical NDIS money skills support can be about much more than paying bills or completing a budget worksheet.

It can help someone understand their money, make everyday spending decisions and work towards goals that genuinely matter to them.

Sometimes that goal is saving for Japan.

Connecting money skills to a meaningful goal

One participant I support has a goal of travelling to Japan, so we have been using that goal as part of our money conversations.

Not in a “save every spare dollar and never enjoy anything again” kind of way.

Instead, we look at the goal in a practical and realistic way.

How much might the trip cost?

How much could be put aside from each payment?

What everyday expenses still need to be paid first?

What smaller steps could make the goal begin to feel possible?

These conversations help turn an exciting idea into something that can be planned for.

What can NDIS money skills support include?

Financial literacy for NDIS participants is not just about learning financial words or filling in a spreadsheet.

It is about building confidence with real-life money decisions.

Depending on the person’s goals and support needs, sessions might include:

  • understanding income and regular expenses

  • making money last between payments

  • planning for bills and everyday spending

  • using cash, cards and online banking safely

  • checking receipts and change

  • understanding needs and wants

  • reducing impulsive spending

  • building an emergency savings buffer

  • saving towards personal goals

  • creating simple visual money routines

Each participant is different, so the support should be different too.

Some people need help understanding their bills. Some benefit from practising with cash and change. Others need a simple weekly spending plan or support to slow down purchases so they still have money available later.

Giving the budget a reason

A budget on its own can feel boring.

A savings plan connected to something exciting feels different.

Suddenly, the numbers are not just numbers. They represent a plane ticket, a passport, a theme park day or another part of a goal that once felt out of reach.

The goal might be a holiday, but it does not have to be.

It could be attending a concert, buying a new phone, joining a hobby or activity, completing a course, purchasing a birthday present, going to the markets or having enough money available for activities during the week.

The goal does not have to be enormous. It simply needs to matter to the person.

Building confidence one step at a time

My one-to-one NDIS budgeting and money skills sessions are practical and individual.

They are not about making someone’s money perfect or removing every enjoyable purchase.

They are about making money easier to understand.

When someone begins to understand where their money is going, what needs to be paid and what they are working towards, they can start to feel more confident and in control of their choices.

That is the part I love.

Money skills are not only about saying no.

They can also help someone understand what may be possible.
